The current Cinema 4D plugin architecture needs to be revamped, I think. There are fundamental pieces of code that make no sense anymore. I've compiled a list of the issues and made some suggestions on where to go from here. I will give each of these issues a space-separated list of users here that expressed the need or problem I found. I will also add some of my own suggestions on how this can be improved (or more accurately, make things better).
The plugin library contains all the DLLs required to make plugins work. However, they are all linked to the default runtime library that is installed. This causes problems when users install a newer version of the runtime library, such as what happens when users upgrade to R14. An artist can't simply uninstall and install the R14 library because it will replace the old library. If you want to use plugins, the best thing to do is to install the library that was build with the R13 or later version of Cinema 4D. This can be done through the Runtime Selector . You will also need to install the runtime DLLs that match your selected SDK, such as the SDK R13 or later. Please note that this has nothing to do with the plugins themselves.
The library viewer has support for the libraries used by plugins and the viewer is the only thing that deals with plugins. Now that the viewer has been updated to R12 to support the plugin architecture in R14, it should be moved into the tools section of the C4D menu. There should be a menu option that shows a list of the libraries used by plugins and a user can choose to view them in the viewer. This eliminates the need for a separate library viewer and makes it easier for artists to get at their plugin libraries.
