Exporter for Contacts (was Export Address Book) is a popular and powerful Mac app to export contact data from Apple's Contacts into various formats, capable of organizing export setups in customizable templates to make repeated exports a lot easier. The app lets you export selected contacts, groups, and whole address books to a CSV or a native Excel file (great for importing stuff into FileMaker), and many, many other formats, such as tab-delimited text, HTML, XML+XSLT, and customizable vCards. It lets you decide which contact fields will be exported and in what order. The app comes with predefined export templates for common applications such as Outlook for Windows or Gmail.
Important: For those who use contact groups, please be aware that the individual contacts of your address book will be included in the export but your contact groups will not. If you use contact groups, please make a note of them prior to migrating so that you can more easily re-create them in Microsoft 365.
Most of the email applications which store address books on your computer will allow you to export information which you can then transfer to other applications or systems. For example, if you are a member of staff moving to the new Exchange mail system, you can export any address books stored on your computer to a file which can then be imported to the new system.
Just like its name says, Easy Backup makes backing up your iPhone contacts as simple as pressing a button. If you want to send your address book to the cloud or email a copy of your contact list to your work email, this is the (free) app for the job. Although its functionality is limited to VCF files, Easy Backup gets bonus points for having the best-looking design of the bunch.
Although its interface may be more utilitarian than the competition, the free version of My Contacts Backup is plenty robust. Want to export your contacts to a CSV format so you can view your address book as a spreadsheet in Excel? This is the app for you. However, if you have more than 500 contacts, be prepared to drop the extra cash on the pro version.
Exporter for Contacts has many features that make the app stand out from the crowd. You can create as many export setups as you want for recurring exports. Each setup automatically remembers which contacts and contact fields you have selected. You can select whole address book accounts, groups and also individual contacts together for export in one go. In addition to the handy Simple Field Chooser, you can also specify in more detail what should be exported and in which order for formats like Excel, CSV and XML using the Custom Export Layout Editor. The app can also format phone numbers in a uniform way during export.
When exporting as a CSV or Excel file, the app even supports address book fields that do not exist in the Contacts app. For example, it can export street name and house number separately. It can also combine data neatly. If a contact has multiple email addresses or phone numbers, they can be easily exported as a list into a single table cell.
Mac users who rely on Google services can sync their Google and Gmail contacts to the Mac address book to improve continuity across their contacts. Once completed, if the user updates a contact in their Gmail contacts, for example, it will update in their Mac contacts as well.
Contact information can be some of the most useful data to export and share with others, and a comprehensive address book can be amongst some of the most important data a user gathers over time. The Mac makes exporting contact information from Mac OS X Contacts app very easy, so whether you want to share and export the entire address book or just a single contact card, that can be done quickly.
Exporting contact information from the Mac Contacts app can also function as a way to back up saved contact information into a single vCard file or .abbu file, which can then be later imported into a different address book application, another Macs Contacts app, or just stored elsewhere as a backup. With the latter situation, keep in mind that if you use iCloud in Mac OS X and iOS, the Contacts will backup to iCloud by default, which means that using the export function as a backup would either be a supplemental backup, or an alternative means of backing up if that feature was disabled for some reason.
